Don't say it, SHOUT ITBy Mauro DeTuro, JrThe significance of a shout or kihop is very vital when training in martial arts. It allows us to utilize our ki when exhaling during routine punching, kicking and blocking exercises. Ki is our mind and body energy working together. Being that breathing is an important factor in our training, the power of a kihop allows us to focus all of our energy at the precise time. If you were to inhale upon completion of a strike, all power and energy would be lost. Try some punching exercises while inhaling. Then try the same punches exhaling. The difference will be very significant. Now add a loud shout (kihop) with each punch and notice the end result. As a beginner in Chayon-Ryu, a student may be reluctant to give a loud shout when training with others. Don't be discouraged. The dojang is a safe-haven to train and practice your many techniques without fear, prejudice or ridicule. Keep training hard, and as you become more comfortable, slowly try to develop the power and intensity of your kihop. It will definitely improve your technique as well as your confidence. Don't be afraid to show your spirit. Good luck, and train hard. |
